Occipital Nerve Block

Headaches can be caused be variety of reasons. One of reason for headaches is occipital neuralgia where pain follows the distribution of the occipital nerve. Occipital nerve blocks are injections around the greater and lesser occipital nerve to reduce the inflammation. These kind of injections would be diagnostic where if the headache gets better with injection, it confirms the diagnosis of occipital neuralgia. Once a diagnosis is established these injection can be  used therapeutically to treat the condition.

These injections can be performed in the office in the back of the head with a very small needle. Most patients get immediate relief lasting for several months.
