Intercostal Nerve Block

The intercostal nerves wrap around the chest underneath each rib. When nerve is inflamed it can result in chronic pain. Pain can radiate around the chest and flank.   Inflammation nerve can result from herpes zoster infection[shingles] , trauma, post-operative etc.

Intercostal nerve block is done for diagnosis and treatment of such pain. It is an injection with numbing medication administered around the area of these nerves leading to decreased pain. It is done under fluoroscopy [X- ray guidance] as out patient procedure.
